Anna Elise Wright PDF  | Print |
Written by Kurt Donath

July 16, 2007

Anna WrightIt is with terrible shock and grief but with the comfort of faith that I pass on the news that the Lord took Anna Wright to be with Jesus yesterday afternoon, even as the waves of Lake Ontario took her body and have kept it hidden so far from rescue and recovery workers. A day of fun at Southwick Beach ended with heaven for Anna, but tragic loss for the rest of us. Others swimming with Anna and caught in the dangerous current - Michael and Lisi LaSala, Josiah Thompson, and Sherralyn Wellman - were rescued, checked out at a hospital in Watertown, and released. They are all physically fine but, of course, very traumatized. Pray for Jonathan & Marty, Kristen & Cory, Matthew & Dean, Daniel, Micah, Allison, Andrew and Timothy, for their extended family, for Anna's many friends at church and in the community. Anna just turned 17 on the 4th of July. She loved Jesus, loved to sing to Him as she played the piano, was a gentle, loving, generous and loyal daughter, sibling and friend, a tough competitor on the soccer field, and cannot be remembered without her smile. Her face was sunshine. She was always, always smiling.

July 17: Update

July 17th, 2007

Anna WrightYou are upholding the Wrights in prayer, and I have been able to see God answering that prayer, sitting with our dear brothers and sisters by the shore of Lake Ontario. With the very deep pain one sees the peace that defies understanding. As many of you know from news reports, the search and recovery crews have not been successful in finding Anna's body. Our comfort is knowing that Anna is not with her body, but with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23), more alive than ever. And that faith is a testimony to these crews at the site. Keep the Wrights in constant prayer. Keep praying for those friends that saw but could not help. Pray that they would know that the Lord appointed the timing of Anna's reward, that He was in control. That Anna's life was full and complete, that she finished her mission of bringing joy and light to those who knew her, that she did it well, and she was chosen to enjoy the immediacy of the Lord's presence, spared from the many toils of this life. Thank the Lord that Kristen and Cory were able to fly in from Denver and join the family by the lake as early as this afternoon. Pray for Daniel who is endeavoring to arrive from Africa as soon as Thursday. Pray that the army would allow Matthew to take leave from his active duty in Seattle and that he too could join his family soon. Many of you are asking what you can do to help. Prayer is priority number one. After that, talk to each other (1 Thessalonians 4:18) and listen to one another - to every member of our church family. These really are the most helpful things you can do. Michele Evertz is coordinating meals - please contact her if you wish to help in that way (487-5410 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Beyond that, there may be need for hospitality for people coming from out of town. Contact Kathy Donath if you can be on call to provide housing ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

July 17: Body Found

July 18th, 2007

Interestingly, the site on the shore of Lake Ontario 3 miles south of Southwick Beach where Anna Wright was taken from us Sunday afternoon is called "The Sanctuary". The Wrights, joined by Marty's mother, Shirley, returned there today. As divers and helicopters searched the waters, friends joined together on the shore to talk, to be quiet, to weep, to laugh, to embrace, to pray, to sing. Young people added rocks, sand, sticks and flowers, to a photo of Anna at a lakeside memorial. Shortly after 6:00 p.m., right about the time others from our church family were gathering at the church building in Syracuse to pray, Anna's body was found by divers and taken to a facility in Watertown. After the family heard this news from a state trooper and spent some time praying together, the whole group - by this time around 45 people - formed a circle to pray and sing the 23rd Psalm.

The prayers of God's people are powerful, and the need for continued prayer remains very great. At this point, a memorial service on Saturday afternoon looks likely, but details of time and place need to be confirmed, and I will pass along that information as soon as possible. While we all want to convey our love and concern to the Wrights, we should also be sensitive to how tired they all are right now. Pray that, as people arrive from out of town, the family would find the rest and quiet they need before Saturday comes.

July 18: Update

July 18, 2007

Precious Family of God,

Through your faithful prayers, God continues to sustain the family and friends Anna Elise Wright left behind. As you pray, may you too taste the peace of entrusting your friends, your cares, questions, and pain to the sympathetic High Priest who bore our griefs and carried our sorrows, to whom has been given all authority in heaven and on earth - "the God who raises the dead" (2 Corinthians 1:9-11).

We thank God that He is answering our prayers to reunite the Wrights from across the country and around the globe. While the army usually gives four days' leave in such circumstances, Matthew got eight and was able to fly home from Seattle this morning. Daniel left Uganda this afternoon - Pray that he will arrive safely tomorrow afternoon as planned.

"Anna" means "gift", "grace". "Elise" is a form of Elizabeth, which means "God's oath." A memorial service celebrating God's gift of Anna, and the grace and promises He has given us in His Son, will be held this Saturday, July 21, 2:00 p.m., at Eastern Hills Bible Church in Manlius. Those not able or inclined to share memories and prayers publicly at that time will be able to leave their written remarks with the family. Jonathan and Marty pray that the service will be a time of healing and grace for many. Eastern Hills can accommodate large numbers, so all are welcome and are encouraged to welcome others. Nursery care will be provided for little ones. The Wright family will regather for the burial some time next week.

July 19: Update

July 19th, 2007

There is now a page about Anna on our church website (www.syracuserpc.org)
containing prayer requests and information (including info about the
memorial service), and on which people can leave messages, comments, and
thoughts. It may be a useful place to direct others to.

I am up watching the sunrise. Jordan Manwaring was doing the same thing on
Wednesday and took the picture below.

sunriseRemember my affliction and my wandering,
the wormwood and bitterness.
Surely my soul remembers
and is bowed down within me.

This I recall to my mind,
therefore I have hope:
The LORD's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Thy faithfulness.
"The LORD is my portion," says my soul,
"Therefore I have hope in Him."

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,
to the person who seeks Him.
It is good that he waits silently
for the salvation of the LORD.

For if He causes grief,
then He will have compassion
according to His abundant lovingkindness.
For He does not afflict willingly,
or grieve the sons of men.

The Lamentations of Jeremiah, iii, 19-26, 32-33.

July 23: Update

July 23, 2007

Thank God for so many answered prayers. He has given the Wright family physical stamina and so much more. He has sustained and deepened their faith in the promises of His Word. He has given them the grace to bear their grief amidst so much public attention, and to do so bearing consistent testimony to the hope of salvation they have in Christ. And God is using His Word and that testimony to touch hearts and transform lives - some in plain view, but how many more that I am not aware of? He is an awesome God, and His Word is living and active. Pray that He would continue this work in individuals, couples, young people, churches; that He would use this moment to bring the grace, healing, and reconciliation that Marty and Jonathan have publicly prayed for.

Around 900 people, believers from many churches as well as many who are not believers, gathered to spend almost three hours together on Saturday afternoon to celebrate God's goodness and Anna's life through music, Scripture, and stories. I am so thankful the each member of the family was able to participate and contribute to that. Yesterday, the family and many of their relatives joined the congregation for worship, where our minds were directed to the hope of the resurrection. In the afternoon, around 40 people from the church, mostly young people, went to Southwick Beach to remember, to pray together, and to encourage one another.

Please pray for the family again this morning as they head up to a cemetery near their farm to bury Anna's body. As relatives and friends go back home, as "normal life" returns, pray for them in perhaps the hardest moments of all - when Anna will be missed in the regular, day to day routines. Keep praying for them, that their eyes might constantly return to be fixed on Jesus, the Perfecter of our faith, who gives us victory over death. Pray for the assurance that, because they are united to Him, they remain united to Anna as well (Ephesians 4:4-6; Colossians 3:1-4; Hebrews 12:22-24). "He is not God of the dead, but of the living" (Matthew 22:32).

All must be Well
This past Friday was the eve of the 15th of the month the night before the 2 month Anniversary of Anna's entering Heaven. On this day our family finds that we think more about the details of that event than usual. The tears flow more easily and frequently. The fear that the pain will never diminish returns. But on this 2 month anniversary I went to the web site and found comfort reading many of the scriptures and other words of encouragement. I too have received blessing and support from the Wright's and from many friends and family members who express their love and share the grief. I am once again reminded that "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" The verse of a song "All Must Be Well" hangs on our wall, it reads,

"We expect a bright tomorrow,
All will be well,
Faith can sing through days of Sorrow,
All, all is well,
On our Father's Love relying
Jesus every need supplying,
Or in living or in dying
All must be well."
Mary Bowly Peters 1813-56

Thanks be to God our Father for holding not only Anna in your care but all of us who believe.

Our words are so inadequate to express our deep sorrow for you at the death of your beautiful, precious Anna. We didn't know her, but how reassuring to hear the wonderful testimonies about her strong faith in the Lord Jesus. May God's words of hope, joy, refuge and love continue to comfort you and we will continue to lift you and the family before God's throne of grace.

Anna's Smile
Everyone who knew Anna talks about her smile. It was positively contagious! Anyone close to Anna caught it: her smile, her happiness, her zest for life, her faith. I am writing to send my heartfelt condolences to Anna's entire family and to her friends, I am writing to express my feelings of sadness over the loss of one of my favorite patients, I am writing to attest to the fact that Anna did, in fact, have one of the biggest, brightest, most genuine smiles in my entire practice!!

I was Anna's dentist. I first met Anna when she was just two years old. An adorable, curly haired little girl, bright and beautiful, arrived at my office on that day. She stood at the door to my treatment room holding her mother's hand, looking in, eagerly waiting her turn as I took care, first, of her brother's and sister's teeth. Matthew was first, then Kristen, next Daniel, then Micah, and Alison. The twins, Andrew and Timothy, waited patiently two more years in their infant car seats. Your turn Anna, I think I said while busily wondering how Anna would feel about her first-ever visit to the dentist. And that's when she let go of her mother's hand and bounded, happily, right up into my dental chair. That's when I first noticed Anna's trust, her confidence, her faith, her enthusiasm, and, of course, her great big smile. That's what I first remembered about Anna on July 15th, 2007 when the news told me, told us, that the beautiful girl who was swept away, lost in the waters at a Lake Ontario beach was Anna Wright.

I will always remember Anna's smile and I will always miss her presence in my office. How can any room of people be as happy without Anna Wright in it? I may have known the details of Anna's smile better than some of you did, but many of you knew Anna better than I did, and I can only hope that you, Anna's family and friends, continue to share with all of us your memories and the stories of Anna's life so that she may continue to influence us by way of her positive energy, her incredible enthusiasm, her undying faith, her boundless love, and that incredible smile.

I am also writing to thank you. The memorial service you shared with all of us that Saturday, just six days later, touched us more than you can imagine. Though many of us came out to Manlius on that day to love and support you, it turned out the other way around; you supported us. We who miss Anna, we who can't understand why she was taken so soon, so young, before we could see her just one more time, before we could tell her what we forgot to say that last time we saw her; on that day, at that memorial service, we were treated to a celebration of Anna's life and given an explanation as to who she was, where she is now, why she had to go so soon, and when we might see her again. We who knew Anna were blessed and we are so grateful to you, Anna's family and friends, for sharing your faith, your love, and your pain with us.

May you, Anna's family and friends, find peace and solace in the fact that Anna touched so many lives and accomplished all she was meant to in her seventeen years.

With our deepest sympathy,

Charlene Hecht and the Lombard

The memorial service was indeed a celebration of life! Although we didn't know Anna well, she touched our lives in a powerful way even in her death. We will pray that the Lord will sustain and continue to bring your family comfort and joy in the days to come and that many will be impacted by the testimony of a life well lived for Jesus. Our prayers continue for you all.

We are so saddened & distressed by the tragedy of Anna's death. Your pain must be immeasurable as parents of such a beautiful, spirited, intelligent young woman who was taken from you so suddenly. It must be a comfort in knowing that Anna is at peace with God at rest. She is the lucky one. Michael was the chosen one to be with her at that last moment. Jonathan and Juliana were a blessing, as well. We can't help but think we could have lost them, as well. I spoke to Jeannette who took us to this website. It is a beautiful testimony in Anna's honor. The support of loved ones, friends, and the communities from all over the country is wonderful, and such a comfort. We only knew Anna through Michael, Lisi, & Jules when they shared experiences with her and your family. One being the trip to Colorado with your family. I know Anna was Lisi & Michael best friend. We offer our deepest condolences to all of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. I remember you welcomed us into your home for dinner and prayers, 2 l/2 years ago. We played games with your family and it was nice. I want to thank you for that good time again.

Kristin's song
With Kristin's kind forgiveness, I offer her setting of Ps. 27 which could be Anna's own words...truly "He'll lift me up upon a rock to stay"

Listen online:

Ps. 27:4-8

One thing I of the LORD desired
And will seek to obtain:
That all days of my life I may
Within GOD’s house remain;

That I the beauty of the LORD
Behold may and admire,
And that I in His holy place
May rev’rently inquire.

He’ll hide me, covered, in His tent;
Hide on the evil day
Within His house; He’ll lift me up
Upon a rock to stay.

And even at this present time
My head shall lifted be
Above all those that are my foes
And round encompass me.

I sacrifices to His house
With joyfulness will bring;
I will Jehovah praise; yea, I
To Him will praises sing.

I did not know Anna in person as I did others in the Wright family. However to see them talk about their family and to see their faces light up and their souls fill with love is a joy that I have witnessed for years. I am deeply saddened and touched by the recent events and cannot help but feel that the Wright family is a part of my life and family. I hope that you can find comfort in knowing that the close relationship that Anna had with God and Jesus has hastened her call Home to be wrapped in the Glory of their Love, and although we are hurting and grieving we can be comforted in knowing that we will be with her again and that she can now become a guiding light for us.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time and for the future as you struggle to return to the day to day tasks.
Please remember that there are many shoulders to fall upon and hands that will reach out to help and comfort you.

Jonathan, I do not personally know your loving family. I have heard wonderful things about your entire family.I was aware of Anna in name as a vibrant high school student by virtue of the ROC Staff, prior to this weeks misfortune.I have also heard glimpses of her siblings. I have assumed from these insights and knowing you, your care and concern you show for your patients and colleagues that your family is special. You have worked hard your spirit, soul and essence to deserve the love and rewards of the special ambieance you exude.
I wept when connecting the news story being that of your family. As a parent and friend I share your loss. It is a difficult acceptance. My thoughts will forever be with you and your family. SOUL DO NOT DISINTEGRATE AND DIE
Souls do not disintegrate and die:
Years pass and yet they do not fade away.
Memories are like a distant star
Pouring forth its light across the void.
All our tears and laughter do not lie:
Though we pass like dreams, our spirits stay,
Held fast by love, which is just what we are,
Yet in a form that cannot be destroyed.

The words to the song "I can only imagine" keep running through my mind...."I can only imagine what it will be like, when I walk by Your side. I can only imagine, what my eyes will see, when Your face is before me! I can only imagine. I can only imagine.
Surrounded by your Glory, what did Anna's heart feel? Did she dance for you , Jesus? Or in awe of You be still? Did she stand in Your presence, or to her knees did she fall? Did she sing 'Halleluhah'? Was she able to speak at all? I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

Jonathan and Family,
So many of us from 8O, 8M, 8H, and elsewhere in the hospital were devistated to hear about your daughter. Words have a hard time healing in the midst of a tragedy like this, but please take comfort in knowing that hundreds of thoughts and prayers continue to go out to you from the nursing staff here at University Hospital.

Jonathan, Marty, Aunt Shirley, and all the family,

We love you and are praying for you. We are deeply sorry for your loss. "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints." We are confident that Christ is glorified in Anna's death as He was in her life. It is good to think of her being face to face with her Savior along with Uncle Willard.

Psalm 27
4 One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.

5 For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and set me high upon a rock.

13 I am still confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.

14 Wait for the LORD;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the LORD.

We are praying with thanksgiving that Anna is lifted up on a rock and praying for those who remain for the strength to wait for the Lord.

Our prayers are with you.
Jonathan, Marty, and family; we grieve with you as a family who has also lost a member, but trust that he/she is now face to face with Jesus. Hebrews 11:1- Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Please know that we are grieving with you all, but also of our hope in the Lord. We live in Seattle and recieved Andrew's email which we passed on to our pastor, Don Piper. Matt and 4 more of us were guests of Richard and Leah Buch on Sunday afternoon and he probably got your phone call as he was driving back to Madigan. Our sovereign Lord knows the number of our days. His grace was obiously on Anna! but we weep for you all. Love, Lyman and Carolyn

Don't think of Anna as gone away..
Her journey has just begun;
Life holds so many facts--
This earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
From lifes sorrows and tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days or years.
Think how she must be wishing
That we could know today,
How nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away.
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched--
For nothing loved is every lost,
and she was loved so much..

Our sincere condolences to Jonathan and Marty and the entire family. God be with you all....

There is no words but God's words that will comfort and heal at a moment as this. And so I am asking the God Who does ALL things well to begin the process of comforting and healing and even assuring the Wright family through His still small voice. May the peace of Christ keep your hearts and minds. I am very sorry for your great loss.

Thank you to those who set this up
A special thak you goes out to Pastor Andrew for the wonderful daily summmaries he sent out to us all. Also to Kurt D. who gathered the news articles and pictures and started the process. And Sean M. who worked to link it all to this page and made the info more accessable. It has been called a ministry already.

Psalm 139:16
"Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them" Psalm 139:16. Remembering Anna's beautiful and gracious smile and love for her family in Christ during the days ordained for her.
